Body & Language: Dulwich Picture Gallery Late

April 19 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

In 2024, Dulwich Picture Gallery presents Soulscapes, a major exhibition of landscape art that will expand and redefine the traditional confines of the genre; exploring our connection with the world around us through the eyes of artists from the African Diaspora.

Soulscapes brings together incredible artists from the African-Caribbean diaspora in the UK and the US. Through their art, they explore themes like belonging, memory, joy and healing. The exhibition uses landscape art to create a sensory and transformative experience, allowing visitors to reflect on their connection with nature.

Featuring more than 30 contemporary works, the show will span painting, photography, film, tapestry, and collage from leading artists including Hurvin Anderson, Phoebe Boswell, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Kimathi Donkor, Isaac Julien, Marcia Michael, Mónica de Miranda and Alberta Whittle, as well as some of the most important emerging voices working today.

The Brixton Project are working in collaboration with the Dulwich Picture Gallery to present a ‘Gallery Late’ event that will position this ground-breaking show beyond the Gallery’s usual audiences with performances, workshops and spontaneous happenings within the gardens and gallery spaces, giving fresh perspective on our integral connection landscape and grounded in the lived experience of residents of Lambeth and Southwark.

In response to the exhibition’s themes we will explore our relationship with the natural world above and below the visible landscape, focusing on the elusive qualities of the air we breathe, and the healing potential, mental, physical and spiritual of our connection to the natural world.

While nestled in one of South London’s greenest areas The Dulwich Picture Gallery is less than 500m from the South Circular’s air pollution superhighway. Our programme will be grounded in examining the health inequalities of Lambeth and Southwark through discussion, participatory activity, and performance.
