Sarah Jane Moon is a painter whose work explores narrative, identity and gender presentation as well as interrogating formal painterly concerns. These colourful, bold and exuberant portraits depict friends of the artist and people she admires and respects. Included are notable creatives such as photographer Lola Flash, performance artist Krishna Istha, writer Juno Roche and doctor and TV personality Dr Ronx. Alongside these individuals sit double portraits of LGBTQIA+ couples in various environments, as well as a self-portrait of the artist in her Brixton studio. These portraits span the last five years of Moon’s practice and show an increased focus on colour, surface and expressive mark making that has come to define her work.
Moon has exhibited with the National Portrait Gallery, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, New English Art Club and the New Zealand Portrait Gallery among others. Her work has been featured in Time Magazine, The Guardian, Wallpaper*, Studio International and House & Garden Magazine.
Moon features in the documentary film ‘She Is Juiced’ (directed by Lois Norman) which premiered at the Tate Britain. She has also been included in the Pride Power List, which celebrates the achievements of notable LGBTQIA+ people and is a regular supporter of Stonewall UK, Terrence Higgins Trust, Pride in London and Art for Youth.
Based in London, Moon is originally from New Zealand and has lived in Japan, Malaysia and Australia. She has postgraduate qualifications in Art Theory and Curatorial Practice from Universities in NZ and Australia as well as qualifications in Portrait Painting from The Heatherley School of Fine Art in Chelsea. Her studio is in Brixton.
