Revisiting Brixton Rec: Documenting living histories

Revisiting Brixton Rec is a community heritage project to create an archive of oral histories, photographs and other digital objects about the often neglected histories of Brixton Recreation Centre.

They want to capture your experiences of the energy, tournaments, conferences, exhibitions and parties at The Rec that make our building, and the ways we use it so special. The project aims to ensure these histories become an archive and resource for future generations.

Please email Revisiting Brixton Rec if you are happy to share your memories and experiences of The Rec, from its opening in 1985 to the present day. We will also be holding public events where people can bring material to be scanned, photographed and digitised to become part of the project archive.

The project will focus on four main themes:

  • Sports leadership
  • Art and design
  • Social Justice
  • Conviviality

If you have a connection to or memories of The Rec and would like to take part we’d love to hear from you. We will be interviewing people throughout the year.

We all want to make it.
Make it in our chosen career. Maybe make it big.

Sometimes perhaps just make it to pay day.
But whatever our ambition, what unites us all is the desire to thrive, be recognised – and be supported.
And that’s what Lambeth’s Creative Enterprise Zone is all about. Supporting creative people to do amazing creative things without having to leave our amazingly creative corner of south London.
Because we all want to make it – of course – but more than that, we want to Make It in Brixton.
